Owen to visit specialist?

Owen Hargreaves may return to see a specialist to finally solve the tendonitis problem that has hampered his United career so far.

The 27-year-old has started just two games this season, and Sir Alex Ferguson says the midfielder will continue with his current regime for another week, at which point the Reds’ medical team will decide whether to send Hargreaves back to see a specialist.

“It’s a difficult one because he is still having some pain,” said the Reds boss. “But he’s getting better. We’re going to give it another week and see how he gets on with that.

“We may then send him to another specialist. We’ll probably send him back to the specialist we dealt with before. The specialist is happy with the progress. He thinks Owen is on the right way.

“It’s just frustrating and it’s such a tender part of the body, the knee. But I think he will be OK. Absolutely, he will [be back to the player he was]. He’s a fit lad.”

The inconvenience of Hargreaves’ absence has been amplified by the knee ligament injury to Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick being sidelined after breaking a bone in his foot against Liverpool in September.

But the real bonus for Sir Alex has been the performances of Ryan Giggs and Darren Fletcher in the trio's absence. Giggs has adapted seamlessly to a now regular central midfield position, while Sir Alex describes Fletcher’s recent new contract as “the relief of the season”.

“I look at Giggs as a central player now, he’s not a wide player any more,” said the boss. “His performance against West Brom was absolutely magnificent. That’s a big bonus for us.

“In Fletcher’s case, it was the relief of the season to get him on a new contract. There were a lot of clubs trying to buy him and he only had a year left on his contract.

“He wanted more football than he got last season. I said to him, ‘You’ve got to recognise that last year after January you played in all the big games until your injury in February’. He came back and played in big games against Chelsea and Barcelona. I think that convinced him to stay. Now we see he has taken his game to a new level.

“[Leaving] could easily have been a consideration for him with Scholes, Hargreaves, Carrick and Anderson all vying for places… But Darren is a United player and in big games he is outstanding. He does a great job for us in big games.”

Hargreaves to see specialist

OWEN Hargreaves is set to visit a specialist this week to see how his knee tendonitis problem is progressing and to decide the next stage of his treatment.

Despite a Sunday newspaper report claiming that Hargreaves was to undergo surgery, he has not yet been told he will definitely need an op.

The club says the 27-year-old has a date with the specialist and nothing has been decided so far.

The knee tendonitis problem has dogged £18m England player's Old Trafford career. It set in almost as soon as he joined the Reds from Bayern Munich in 2007.

Sir Alex Ferguson has maintained all along that an operation was unlikely and that time would be the healer. But this week's visit to the specialist will determine the way ahead.

He has only appeared in three matches this season.

Owen may not need op

Contrary to press reports last weekend, a decision has not been made on the best treatment for Owen Hargreaves’ ongoing tendonitis problem.

Some UK papers claimed Hargreaves was set to go under the knife in an effort to ease the knee trouble he’s experienced since arriving at United in July 2007. The on-again, off-again nature of the problem has restricted the midfielder to just three appearances this season.

Earlier this week, a club spokesperson told ManUtd.com Hargreaves would return to a specialist; on Tuesday evening, Sir Alex Ferguson revealed a decision on the best way forward is unlikely to be made before next week.

“We’re managing it at the moment,” he said. “We should have some news next week on our exact position.”

Meanwhile, an ankle injury means Wes Brown didn’t travel to Glasgow for Wednesday night’s match against Celtic. The boss said Brown could be out of action for “a couple of weeks”.

Hargreaves career in danger?

Owen Hargreaves has flown to the United States in a bid to find a solution to his mystery long-term knee injury and salvage his Manchester United career.

The England midfielder recently visited specialists in Sweden and London who failed to find an answer to the persistent tendonitis problem that has restricted Hargreaves to just three appearances this season.

And he has now been sent to world renowned surgeon Dr Richard Steadman amid growing fears that the player could require major surgery, or even that his career could come to a premature end.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: "We have been trying to manage the situation and the way we have been trying to manage it has not given us an answer.

"Over the past ten days he has been to see a specialist in Sweden and sent him to a specialist in London and he is now in Colorado at the moment seeing Mr Steadman who is a very well regarded and respected doctor in these particular types of injuries.

"What we are trying to do now is get to the root of it because the lad has been frustrated and patient and we have never really got to the bottom of his problem.

"But we really need to speed that up now and that is why we have sent him to the best people available to try and get an opinion on where we go from here.

"He is now in Colorado and we are waiting for information to come back. He has been carrying it for too long for us to hope that injections are just going to do the trick."

Hargreaves, 27, has so far made just 17 league starts for United since joining from Bayern Munich before the start of last season and Ferguson admitted the situation is causing concern.

He added: "Owen has come back for different games and then been out again and it is frustrating for the lad and we are trying to help him."

Ferguson has been handed better news after Paul Scholes stepped up his recovery from a knee problem, enabling him to target a December return.

The manager said: "Paul Scholes has started training. It's only straight running and nothing serious but it's good to see him overcome the injury itself and move onto the next part of his rehabilitation.

"I think he will be available to go to the World Club Championship in Japan. That's what we have pencilled in."

his case is serious coz he referred to Dr Steadman. but he's a really good doctor. i think hargo has a chance to recover here. but then, this is tendonitis we're talking abt. u just can't cut out a dead person's tendon and put into hargo's knee for replacement. and i never heard that the cure is going under the knife. sorry, guys.. but I STILL LOVE HARGO!!
