Post The Ten Best Transfer Shocks
The Ten Best Transfer Shocks
Chosen by Simon Rice

Kaka's proposed move to Manchester City would be the greatest shock of them all, but it wouldn't be the first transfer to raise a few eyebrows.

1. Eric Cantona [Leeds - Man Utd]

Eric Cantona was part of the Leeds team that won the final old first division in 1992, yet later that year, Manchester United stepped in with a surprise bid of £1.2m and the Frenchman moved to Old Trafford. Cantona went on to become an Old Trafford idol, helping the team to become the dominant force in English football that they are now. He was voted by fans as Manchester United's Player of the Century.

2. Luis Figo [ Barcelona to Real Madrid]

Luis Figo's transfer to the Bernabeu in 2000 made him the most expensive player in the world at the time, but the move is better remembered for the furious reaction of the Barcelona fans. The Portuguese midfielder was adored among fans at the Nou Camp, but his decision to defer to the Catalan club's greatest rivals, meant their feeling turned to hatred.

3. Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez: Corinthians to West Ham

West Ham pulled off a memorable coup when they signed the Argentine duo in 2006. The pair had been linked with a host of big clubs, yet ended up heading to Upton Park after a deal was struck with the players' economic rights holders. West Ham had a dreadful year, but avoided relegation on the last day of the season when they beat Manchester United, thanks to a goal from Tevez. The players have since moved on, while West Ham have been left to deal with investigations over the legality of the deal that brought them to the club.

4. Robinho: Real Madrid to Manchester City

The Brazilian wonder-kid had been linked with Chelsea all summer - the West London club were even selling shirts with his name on - but with literally a few minutes left of the transfer window, Manchester City stepped in with a £32.5m bid that took him to Eastlands. Robinho's move to Manchester City was the culmination of a whirlwind change at the club that had seen them bought by Sheikh Mansour al-Nahyan and become the richest club on the planet.

5. Sol Campbell: Tottenham to Arsenal

The former England defender was out of contract at Tottenham and had the world at his feet. Yet despite offers from the likes of Barcelona and Inter Milan on the table, he chose instead to move to north London rivals Arsenal. The move in 2001 came as a shock because of Campbell's perceived affiliation and loyalty to Tottenham. His transfer caused outrage among Spurs fans who have never let him forget his 'betrayal'.

6. Kevin Keegan: Hamburg to Southampton

In 1980, Southampton called a press conference to announce that the European Footballer of the Year would be joining them later that summer. The move came as a complete shock to the world of football. The Saints were in the top flight but they remained a relatively small club. Having just played in the European Cup final and about to captain England at the 1980 European Champions, Keegan's decision was baffling.

7. Mo Johnston: Nantes to Rangers

Mo Johnston's return to Scotland came as a shock to both halves of Glasgow. After leaving Celtic in 1987 to join Nantes, he said that he would never return to Scotland. Yet Johnston changed his mind and announced that he would sign for Celtic at the end of his contract. In July 1989, after a last minute change of mind, Johnston joined Graeme Souness's Rangers instead. The move caused anger amongst both sets of supporters.

8. David Beckham: Real Madrid to LA Galaxy

David Beckham's problems during the 2006/07 season were well publicised. He was dropped from the England team by Steve McClaren and then fell out with his Real Madrid boss Fabio Capello. It became clear he was likely to move on but his decision to move to LA Galaxy still came as a surprise. He had offers from around the world but decided to head for the Home Depot Center in the United States.

9. Jurgen Klinsmann: AS Monaco to Tottenham

Jurgen Klinsmann was one of the hottest properties in football and Tottenham's coup in signing the German caused a huge fuss. Klinsmann was not a popular character in England when he signed in 1994. He was a part of the Germany team that knocked England out of the 1990 World Cup and had a reputation for diving. Klinsmann helped change opinion when, on his debut, the striker poked fun at himself by diving across the pitch to celebrate his first goal.

10. Diego Maradona Barcelona to Napoli

The Argentinean genius moved from European giants Barcelona to Serie A side Napoli in 1984. The £6.9m move was a record transfer fee at the time but his decision to go to Napoli came as a surprise. Napoli had never won an Italian Championship before he joined the club yet his move proved a wise one. He led them to two Serie A titles over the next six years and lifted the World Cup in 1986 while playing for the club.
