Young pair join injured list

United's injury curse claimed two young casualties as Danny Welbeck and Fabio were added to the "out or doubt" list for Tuesday's trip to West Brom.

Welbeck limped off late in the second half of Saturday's FA Cup victory over Tottenham and was replaced by new signing Zoran Tosic. Meanwhile Fabio's United debut ended shortly after the break, giving Richard Eckersley his first senior run-out as substitute.

"Danny Welbeck got kicked on the ankle. It’s nothing serious but I don’t think he’ll make Tuesday," Sir Alex Ferguson told MUTV.

"Young Fabio has a calf strain and it’s disappointing because he’s only just come back from a long injury. He did very well too.

"You could do without these things but I’ve got Fletcher, Giggs, Gibson and Possebon who are all fresh. I’m okay with midfield players and the front players. It’s just the full-back positions that cause us a bit of concern."

Sir Alex ruled ten players out of the Tottenham match in his press conference on Friday, and he almost had to make it a full eleven when Cristiano Ronaldo fell ill.

"We had to get the doctor in to see Cristiano this morning," revealed the manager.

"He had a bit of a bug and I think it showed today, I don’t think he was anywhere near ready. But he showed the appetite to play and it’s always good to have him on the pitch, opponents are always aware of him. He should be better by Tuesday."

Post Re: Sir Alex's injury update
Crisis? What Injury Crisis?

Manchester United have an injury list. A very long injury list. What they do not have is a crisis.

'Crisis' is perhaps the most badly-used word in football along with 'hero', 'handbags', 'character' and 'irony'. In almost ever instance of their deployment, those words are either misunderstood or misapplied. To describe an occurrence in football as a 'crisis' is almost always to reveal a fearsome lack of perspective. Ten years ago, then Blackburn Rovers Roy Hodgson was asked how he was coping with a 'crisis' at Ewood Park. His response was to stare down the reporter and reflect that "The only two crises I can remember were Suez and the Bay of Pigs when I thought my life might end because of a nuclear war."

The quote lost some of its impact a week or so later when Hodgson lost his job, but his contempt would equally be well-served with regards to United's proclaimed 'injury crisis' and fixture 'pile-up'. What Sir Alex Ferguson is currently contending with is a minor headache, an inconvenience, an irritating nuisance. As he considers which of his 30 or so established players to select in United's next game, his is a problem that almost every other football club in Britain would give up its pitch to contemplate.

Nor is it exactly prolonged. Of United's limping wounded, the vast majority are only short-term casualties and should return in a couple of weeks. To Ferguson's credit, he has not made an undue fuss over the absences. But then there isn't much to make a fuss about. Derby and Tottenham surrendered meekly this week and as Ferguson noted on Saturday: "I'm okay with midfield players and the front players. It's just the full-back positions that cause us a bit of concern." It could be worse. It could be much worse.

The truth of the matter is that United are currently enduring a lengthy injury-list because they are fighting on four fronts. It is, quite literally, the occupational hazed to be endured for pursuing the quadruple - or a quintuple, if we're counting the Club World Championship. Along with that picked schedule, their 'crisis' is a measure of success not impending doom and it is precisely because Manchester United expect to be engaged in multiple pursuits after Christmas - and to be suffering the inevitable collateral damage that comes from such greediness - that they boast a mammoth squad.

As such, Ferguson should perhaps be grateful that his injury bulletins are in double figures. Without injuries, the Manchester United manger may have had a problem in justifying the expense of so many well-remunerated players on the payroll to the club's board, not to mention quelling the discontent of those suffering the realisation that only eleven players can be fielded at any one time.

So it could be said that Ferguson needs a 'crisis' once in a while. If so, it could also just as easily be said that the reason Ferguson has so many players at his disposal is because he wanted to build a squad to be crisis-proof.

Hey presto. Forewarned and forearmed, United's current inconvenience has thus been theoretical rather than practical. A host of players have proved their worth - with Jonny Evans superb as cover for Rio Ferdinand, Fabio looking as good as his twin during his cameo on Saturday, and Darren Fletcher ensuring that Owen Hargreaves has yet to be missed - and the wins have kept coming. It's as if nobody is missing - which is precisely the point.

No longer suffering from an embarrassment of riches due to Wayne Rooney taking a mid-season break, Ferguson has even been able to select Carlos Tevez on a regular basis, an absolute necessity if the board are to heed his
his wish for the Argentine's stay at Old Trafford to be made permanent. Saturday marked the striker's 19th start of the season - Tevez may not have been over-used this term but neither has he been idle - and a 20th will almost certainly occur at the Hawthorns on Tuesday.

Alongside the £32m-valued Argenine will be the £30m-bought Dimi Berbatov and the goodness-only-what rated Cristiano Ronaldo.

Some 'crisis' indeed.
