FA charge Ferdinand

The Football Association has charged Rio Ferdinand with violent conduct following an off-the-ball incident in United's 4-0 win over Hull City on Saturday.

Ferdinand clashed with Hull forward Craig Fagan during the second half and now has until 6pm on Wednesday 27 January to respond to the charge. A Regulatory Commission will hear the charge on Thursday 28 January.

Rio handed four-game ban

Rio Ferdinand has been handed a four-match suspension after being found guilty of violent conduct by the Football Association.

The Reds' defender was involved in an off-the-ball incident during United's 4-0 victory over Hull City and will now miss the next four matches against Arsenal, Portsmouth, Aston Villa and Everton.

A statement on the FA website said: "At an Independent Regulatory Commission today [Thursday] Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was given a four-match suspension to be served with immediate effect.

"Ferdinand denied a charge of violent conduct in relation to an incident in Manchester United’s home match with Hull City on Saturday 23 January 2010.

"Furthermore, the Independent Commission felt that the player’s claim against the charge was frivolous and on that basis have awarded an additional one match ban upon the statutory three match ban awarded for violent conduct."

Ferdinand appeals extra match ban

Rio Ferdinand has appealed against an extra one-match ban imposed by a Football Association disciplinary commission.

A hearing is likely to take place before the end of next week after the Manchester United defender's latest appeal.

Ferdinand had the extra match ban imposed for a "frivolous" appeal against the three-game suspension he was given for striking Hull's Craig Fagan, making a total of four games in all he would miss.

The appeal board will have the power to revoke the extra ban, but also to increase it further - if they did so it would mean Ferdinand would miss the Carling Cup final against Aston Villa on February 28.

Rio withdraws ban appeal

Rio Ferdinand has withdrawn an appeal to the FA over his four-match ban.

A statement issued by the FA reads: "The FA can confirm that an application by Manchester United to withdraw an appeal by Rio Ferdinand has been accepted by the Appeal Board Chairman. Ferdinand had appealed against the decision of an independent Regulatory Commission on 28 January at which he was given a four-match suspension in relation to an incident in Manchester United’s match with Hull City on Saturday 23 January."

The newly-installed England captain was initially charged with violent conduct on 26 January following an off-the-ball clash with Hull forward Craig Fagan at Old Trafford.

The original offence carried a three-match ban, which Ferdinand duly appealed. But the appeal was considered “frivolous” by the FA and the ban extended to four games on 28 January.

Rio has already served two matches of the four-game ban and is due to also miss United’s away games against Aston Villa (Wednesday 10 February) and Everton (Saturday 20 February). He'll be available for selection in the Carling Cup final on Sunday 28 February.
