Match Pack: Hull City

Form Guide: The Tigers’ away form is certainly nothing to roar about. In fact, since Hull’s last visit to Old Trafford, back in November 2008, Phil Brown’s side have picked up just 12 points from a possible 78 on their travels. That said, Hull did manage a point at White Hart Lane in their last league outing. United, on the other hand, have lost just once at Old Trafford in the league this term. In the last four games in all competitions, however, the Reds have only won once (last weekend against Burnley). Sir Alex’s men’s most recent outing was the Carling Cup semi-final first leg loss to Manchester City.

Ins & Outs: The Africa Cup of Nations has robbed Hull of Seyi Olofinjana (Nigeria) and Daniel Cousin (Gabon), while this fixture could come a week or two early for Jimmy Bullard (knee). Meanwhile, there’s speculation Rio Ferdinand could return for United this weekend, although Sir Alex will reveal how true that is at his Friday press conference. Dimitar Berbatov is a doubt after missing the game at City with a dead leg and John O’Shea looks sidelined for the rest of the season (also a dead leg).

Referee: Steve Bennett has taken charge of the Reds twice at Old Trafford this season. Both games (Everton and Wolves) ended in 3-0 home wins. Hull will remember him most recently from their game at the Emirates, in which he booked six players.

Rio fit to face Hull

Rio Ferdinand is set to make his first start since October when United welcome Hull City to Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Reds defender has missed United's last 19 fixtures with the recurrence of a back injury first sustained last season.

At Sir Alex's Friday morning press conference, the manager confirmed Rio's likely return, labelling the news "a big boost".

"I think Rio Ferdinand will play tomorrow which is good news. He’s been training very well in the last two weeks and we've been through the whole situation with him in terms of him doing enough training, endurance work, his timing... he’s done very well and now is the right time to bring him back.

"It’s a big boost. It’s been the weakest part of our game this season (the defence). Van der Sar, Vidic, Ferdinand, Neville, John O’Shea, Wes Brown and Jonny Evans have all been injured at various times of the season. We’ve had a rough time, so to get them all back can only be good for us.

"Nemanja Vidic is still probably about two weeks away, I imagine, but we’re getting closer to getting the full squad back."

The manager also revealed striker Dimitar Berbatov is fit again after missing United's Carling Cup tie at Manchester City with a knock, Mame Biram Diouf could also be involved against Hull on Saturday after impressing in the Reserves on Thursday night.

"We’re very pleased with Diouf. He’s done exceptionally well in training, he scored against Burnley and last night he grabbed a hat-trick for the Reserves. We took him off last night but it was only a precaution and he’ll feature in my thinking for tomorrow."

Meanwhile Owen Hargreaves continues to make steady progress and is set to be named on Sir Alex's list of players for the knock-out phase of the Champions League.

"Owen is still training with the reserves, doing two days on and one day off as he prepares to get to the proper levels," said the boss.

"He’s done two or three sessions with us in the last couple of weeks, and he did very well in Qatar. It’s a process and hopefully we’re getting to the point now where he feels confident about playing. I will probably name in my Champions League squad. That will be finalised in the next ten days and unless anything untoward happens, I imagine I’ll be picking him."

would love to see line up for tomorrow is a mix between few senior and young player..
maybe de laet and abg mame can be given a run out by the gaffer.
rooney probably need a rest. we need him in clash againts citeh.
owen also should get a start for tomorrow. maybe partner with abg berba@abg mame? i dont see why SAF dont want to use owen in 1st eleven. remember his hatrick againt Wolfsburg?
however we cant really see this match as easier than we thought. it is our best chance at the moment to go back at the top.
