there is no used forcing someone who no longer wants to stay.. once there's a change of heart, it would be pointless to make them stay..

desperate times calls 4 desperate/stupid measures..

Spurs set to secure £15m Defoe?

Jermain Defoe was closing in on a return from Portsmouth to Tottenham on Sunday night as the clubs thrashed out a fee close to £15million.

The offer is £500,000 below Portsmouth’s valuation, but bonuses will be added if Spurs qualify for Europe.

Defoe will be free to play against Burnley in the Carling Cup on Tuesday if the transfer is registered in time with the Premier League.

The deal represents a remarkable £5m profit for Portsmouth, who signed Defoe from Tottenham only last January.

Spurs may follow the capture of Defoe with the signing of West Ham forward Craig Bellamy.

They have increased their offer to £9million for the Wales captain.

Defoe’s signing is expected to be completed this morning. The north London club would also agree to waive money owed by Portsmouth for defender Younes Kaboul.

As Sportsmail revealed last week, Defoe had made it clear to Portsmouth he wanted to rejoin Spurs rather than any other club.

Tottenham agree Defoe fee
Eurosport - Tue, 06 Jan 09:46:00 2009

Portsmouth have accepted a bid believed to be around £15 million from Tottenham Hotspur for striker Jermain Defoe.

Harry Redknapp has made the England international his main target in the January transfer window as he looks to bolster his striking options.

Portsmouth had insisted they would not allow Defoe to leave for less than £20 million, but admitted defeat in their bid to keep him and confirmed the two clubs have agreed a deal believed to fall some way short of Pompey's valuation.

Defoe is now poised to undergo a medical at the club he left just under a year ago.

The 26-year-old quit White Hart Lane after four years at the club to work with Redknapp at Fratton Park in a £7.5 million deal.

However, Redknapp's departure to Spurs in October has hit him harder than most.

He said: "I've enjoyed my time immensely here, but I can't deny that Harry Redknapp's departure as manager hit me hard particularly because he was the reason why I joined Portsmouth in the first place.

"I have a great deal of respect for Tony Adams and what he's trying to achieve. We have a very good working relationship.

"But I left Tottenham to join Portsmouth with the intention of working with Harry for a considerable time to come.

"I could have gone to other clubs when I left Tottenham, but I wanted to work with Harry."

Defoe's position at Portsmouth effectively became untenable when he revealed he had received death threats from fans unhappy with his desire to return to Spurs.

The 26-year-old could be unveiled as a Tottenham player as early as this evening when Spurs take on Burnley in the first leg of their Carling Cup semi-final.

The exodus at south coast club Portsmouth continues as Jermain Defoe follows Lassana Diarra out of the Fratton Park exit in the January transfer window.

Pompey have collected impressive sums for the two departures, if reports are to be believed, as the Hampshire side bagged £20 million for Diarra, while Defoe, the striker they paid Spurs £7.5 million for this time last year, has apparently been sold for £15 million.

Harry Redknapp will now manage and coach Defoe for the third time after working with the England hopeful at West Ham United, Portsmouth, and now Tottenham.

A statement on the club's official website read: "Jermain Defoe makes his return to The Lane tonight - and will be presented to fans before the Carling Cup semi-final with Burnley."

In four years at Spurs Defoe found the net 64 times, in 177 outings.

The Defoe transfer will not be Redknapp's only piece of business in January. Free-agent Stephen Appiah has been training with the north London outfit and, medical pending, could be offered a permanent deal over the next few weeks.

Redknapp has long been an admirer of Appiah, and is alledged to have tried to sign the Ghanaian for Portsmouth, but instead opted for Sulley Muntari.
