Tottenham complete Chimbonda signing

Tottenham have signed Carlo Cudicini from Chelsea and Pascal Chimbonda from Sunderland, Harry Redknapp has confirmed.

Chimbonda left White Hart Lane in the summer but failed to settle in the north-east and will now provide Spurs boss Redknapp with cover across his defence.

The 29-year-old Frenchman will not, however, be available for the home Barclays Premier League clash against Stoke on Tuesday evening.

"I've signed him and he's coming here," Redknapp said.

"The deal should have been done in the morning but it's over-run the deadline for him to play against Stoke. It was done 15 minutes too late which was disappointing. Otherwise he would have been available."

Cudicini, the 35-year-old goalkeeper, has been drafted in to compete with current number one Heurelho Gomes, who has been carrying a thigh strain.

The Italian had been at Chelsea since 1999 and was first-choice goalkeeper at the club until the arrival of Petr Cech in 2004.

Cudicini originally signed for Chelsea on a year-long loan from Castel di Sangro in the summer of 1999 and made his move permanent the following summer for £160,000.

He was named the Blues' player of the year in 2002 and has helped the club win two Premier League titles, two FA Cups and two League Cups.

Cesar Sanchez's departure to Valencia last week left Redknapp with only youngster Ben Alnwick as cover for Gomes.

Pascal Chimbonda takes pay cut to join Tottenham

Pascal Chimbonda was so desperate to leave Sunderland and return to the bright lights of London that he accepted a pay cut which could end up costing him £3 million.

The French defender will have the chance to make up the shortfall in wages over the next few years following his £3 million move back to Tottenham through a highly incentivised contract.

Chimbonda won himself few friends when he turned his back on Wigan after handing in a transfer request following the season finale against Arsenal three years ago just months, after renegotiating a four-year deal at the JJB Stadium.

He joined Tottenham but was deemed surplus to requirements last summer and signed for Sunderland.

The French defender failed to settle in his new surroundings and soon came in to conflict with manager Roy Keane.

Their first falling-out denied Chimbonda an early return to White Hart Lane because he turned up late for the pre-match stroll at Sunderland’s Hertfordshire hotel ahead of their match with Spurs.

Keane, a stickler for punctuality, dropped his new signing. He was axed again for arriving late at training following his best performance in a Sunderland shirt in the 2-1 win over Newcastle.

Chimbonda, who made just 16 appearances for Sunderland, called a hotel home during his six months at Sunderland and spent much of his time in London.

Last night his agent, Willie McKay, insisted: “His move has got nothing to do with football reasons. There was no problem in that respect as far as Sunderland were concerned.

“Niall Quinn has been different class as a chairman with Pascal because he knew that he was struggling to settle in the North East because his wife had not moved up from London.”

Tottenham All Set To Sign Peter Crouch From Portsmouth

The Peter Crouch saga looks to have come to an end, with reports suggesting a deal has been agreed with Tottenham Hotspur.

Crouch has been linked with a move away from Pompey all summer, with Sunderland and Fulham trying to land him.

However, according to some reports, Tottenham have won the race for his signature. They claim that Spurs have had a £10 million bid accepted, and Crouch will sign a five-year deal worth £70,000 per week.

Indeed, Portsmouth manager Paul Hart appears resigned to losing Crouch, saying, "Obviously I'm disappointed to see Peter leave, but given the severe financial restraints in place here we had no choice but to accept an offer from Tottenham.

"I think people need to realise that Pompey have been punching way above their weight and could no longer sustain the level of spending that has gone on here over the past three years.

"And even though a new owner is poised to come in, our dealings in the market will be modest in comparison to the past."

Portsmouth Accept Bid From Tottenham Hotspur For Peter Crouch

Portsmouth have accepted an offer from Tottenham Hotspur for long-time transfer target Peter Crouch, according to the south coast club's manager Paul Hart.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp had recently declared his interest in the England international, but appeared to be baulking at the asking price for the player, believed to be £12 million.

However, a deal worth a reported £10m is understood to have been agreed and Hart revealed Pompey simply could not afford to refuse the offer.

"Given the severe financial restraints in place here, we had no choice but to accept an offer from Spurs," Hart told The Mirror.

"Obviously, I'm disappointed to see Peter leave. (But) I think people need to realise that Pompey have been punching way above their weight and could no longer sustain the level of spending that has gone on here over the past three years.

"And, even though a new owner is poised to come in, our dealings in the market will be modest in comparison to the past."

Crouch is set to agree personal terms and sign a contract at White Hart Lane during the coming week, and could travel with the club to take part in the Asia Cup.
