Cap fits but Foster must wait

Ben Foster has finally met Fabio Capello at Wembley - but admitted he has plenty to do before being in the England squad.

Capello is bound to have been impressed by Foster's man-of-the-match display in the Carling Cup Final.

Eye-catching saves to deny Darren Bent and Aaron Lennon ensured the showpiece went to extra-time. And in the decisive penalty shoot-out, Foster used the knowledge gained from an iPod to make the all-important save from Jamie O'Hara that helped ensure United were able to lift the cup.

Yet, as Foster is acutely aware, he will be on the bench at best on Wednesday, when the Red Devils tackle Newcastle at St James' Park.

And though Joe Hart was picked for last month's friendly in Spain despite finding himself in exactly the same position at Manchester City, Foster realises it is hardly a position from which he can expect to force his way into Capello's plans.

"I had never spoken to Fabio Capello until I went up to get the trophy," said Foster.

"He shook my hand and said well done, which was nice, but I have to be realistic, I need to be playing.

"I can't expect to be in the England team when I don't play very often at United.

"From the outside, Fabio seems to have introduced a great work ethic to the England squad.

"He is not going to pick players on name, he is going to pick people who are playing well."

The problem for Foster is that as well as he did at Wembley, it is hard to make any kind of case for Van der Sar's exclusion.

Apart from the three goals he conceded against Gamba Osaka at the Club World Cup, Van der Sar has kept 17 consecutive clean sheets, an amazing record to which Foster can only pay tribute.

"I wouldn't have thought one final will lead to a run of games for me," reflected the 25-year-old.

"We want to win everything this season and Edwin has been unbelievable for us.

"You only have to look at his record of clean sheets, which has been fantastic.

"It is just a bit of bad luck and circumstance that is keeping me out, so I just have to keep going."

There does seem to have been a change in approach now for Foster.

At various points in a United career that began in 2005 when he joined from Stoke, Foster has spoken of his desire to spend time away from Old Trafford on loan in a bid to further his career.

After two successful spells at Watford, the Leamington Spa-born keeper was then sidelined for almost all of last season following a cruciate operation.

Again, he spoke of the need to move away. Now though, it appears he has had a change of heart.

"I want to stay here," he said.

"I am at Manchester United, the biggest club in the world and I want to be here for as long as I can.

"At 25 I am still young for a goalkeeper, so hopefully I have now begun what will be the first in a long line of trophies."

With 16 months left on his current contract, Foster has plenty of time to earn an extension, even though Ferguson has not mentioned it.

The United boss has stated his belief that he has a player capable of being England's next number one for the next decade.

"Edwin is the present, Ben is the future," was Ferguson's rather succinct assessment.

For now though, Foster must play a game of patience, at least able to content himself in the knowledge he is no longer an odd man out in the all-conquering United dressing room.

"It is a strange feeling because I have been signed for the club for so long, yet I have not played that often and not got my hands on a medal," said Foster, who was making his seventh first-team appearance.

"It has been a bit of a nightmare.

"I have either been out on loan or I have been injured. To finally get my hands on a trophy is a massive boost.

"I know I am a good goalkeeper and I know what I have done before. I just have to try and do the same again."

**********

YEA.. THAT'S THE SPIRIT, CHAP!! we'll be counting the days til u become England's #1. hehe...
