FERDINAND OUT OF BORO CLASH

Sir Alex Ferguson revealed Rio Ferdinand would be out for up to 10 days after the England defender withdrew before Manchester United's 1-0 win at Stoke.

Ferdinand pulled out of the game at the Britannia Stadium with a back problem and the Red Devils boss admitted the player would miss United's next game against Middlesbrough at Old Trafford on Monday.

Ferguson told Sky Sports 1: "He'll be out. We have to get to the root of this."

When asked if his captain would be ruled out for a long time, Ferguson added: "Not necessarily; maybe in 10 days he should be okay."

Rio's back in the treatment room

Rio Ferdinand will miss Middlesbrough’s visit to Old Trafford on Monday after suffering a back spasm in the warm-up at the Britannia Stadium.

The centre-half was named in Sir Alex’s starting XI but was forced to withdraw shortly before kick-off.

Now Ferdinand is expected to miss the Reds’ next two fixtures.

“Rio won’t play against Middlesbrough,” Sir Alex confirmed after the match.

“He had a back spasm again. We have to get to the root of this; he’s had this back problem too many times, so we want to get to the bottom of it.

“First of all, we’ll give him complete rest, but I think he’ll be okay in about 10 days.”

United's FA Cup third round trip to Southampton on 4 January could come too soon for Rio, although he could return in time for the Carling Cup semi-final first leg against Derby County on 7 January. The Reds welcome Chelsea to Old Trafford on Sunday 11 January.

Rio Injury 'Not Major' - Ferguson
Fri 02 Jan, 03:09 PM

Sir Alex Ferguson is crossing his fingers Rio Ferdinand will be fit for next Sunday's Premier League title showdown with Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Ferdinand has already been ruled out of Manchester United's FA Cup trip to Southampton this weekend and Wednesday's Carling Cup semi-final first-leg clash with Derby after suffering back spasms before the Boxing Day win over Stoke.

The 30-year-old has still not returned to training but Ferguson remains hopeful his former record signing will be able to face the Blues after more intensive treatment this week.

Long-term, Ferguson feels the England vice-captain will benefit from extra physio and gym work aimed at combating a problem that has recurred too frequently this season for United's liking.

"It is not a major one but it has reared its head a few times this season," said the Red Devils chief.

"It can happen with athletes and at the moment we are managing it the best we can, hoping Rio will be ready for Sunday's game at Chelsea.

"We are giving it time to settle but the work we are doing is geared towards making his back more supple so there is more resilience to what is happening. That is why the work he does in the gym is important."

In the meantime, Jonny Evans will continue to act as Ferdinand's deputy, with Gary Neville possibly filling a central defensive berth at Pride Park next week.

Ferdinand to see specialist
Eurosport - Sun, 11 Jan 18:17:00 2009

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand will visit a specialist on Monday after he was ruled out of his side's home Premier League clash with Chelsea because of a recurring back injury.

The England international had been declared fit in the buildup to the game but manager Alex Ferguson said he had suffered a muscle spasm.

"Rio trained all week without a problem but woke up this morning with another spasm so we're going to send him to another specialist tomorrow because it's becoming a problem for us," Ferguson told Sky Sports.

Ferdinand has missed United's last four matches.
