ENGLAND : FA CUP

FA Cup Loses E.ON Sponsorship

The energy company is in the final 12 months of its four-year contract with the tournament, and has announced that it will not be extending the agreement.

An E.ON spokesperson said, "After careful consideration, we will not be entering another term of sponsorship beyond the end of the 2009-10 season, due to an evolution in sponsorship strategy within the UK business.

"Over the past three years, the FA Cup has been a great success for us in establishing the E.ON business and brand domestically.

"We remain absolutely committed to our final year, but we will be keeping our options open regarding our future sponsorship plans."

This marks another massive financial concern for the FA Cup, which raked in £9 million per year from the E.ON contract.

English football's governers were already in a bind following the collapse of the television deal with the now-defunct Setanta, and thus they must now find a way to recover some £106m in lost revenue.

It is thought that the FA's move to ditch Sky and BBC in favour of Setanta and ITV was a key factor in E.ON's decision to discontinue its involvement.

ENGLAND : CARLING CUP

Carling Cup games to clash
September 03, 2009

CITY and United will play at home on the same night later this month.

Although the situation is not completely unknown, it is rare and had been resisted by Greater Manchester Police, who were no doubt mindful of the ugly scenes at West Ham's Carling Cup match against Millwall last week.

However, further discussions have managed to gain the agreement of the authorities, which mean Old Trafford will host a Carling Cup third-round tie between United and Wolves on Wednesday, September 23 - a match that will be screened live on Sky TV - with City hosting Fulham the same night, both with an 8pm kick-off.

The situation had been complicated because the Manchester derby is being played on Sunday, September 20, leading to a reluctance from both sides to play their cup fixtures 48 hours later on the Tuesday.

City were willing to host a Thursday fixture as they are not in action until the following Monday against West Ham.

However, that was no use to Fulham, who are playing Arsenal on the Saturday.

GMP eventually relented once the kick-off times were pushed back slightly, which they expect will reduce the potential for problems around normal rush hour and make fans keener to return home straight after the games.
