Copa Del Rey Round-Up: Athletic See Off Sporting, Mallorca Sneak Past Betis

Wednesday 28th January
Real Betis 0 (0)- Real Mallorca 0 (1) Mallorca win 1-0 on agg.
Sporting Gijon 1 (0)- Athletic Bilbao 2 (0) Athletic win 2-1 on agg.

Real Betis 0 - 0 Real Mallorca

Paco Chaparro's Betis side have been struggling not only for form in recent weeks but also have been finding it difficult score goals, with Sergio Garcia proving to be their only real threat in the final third.

But tonight the permutation was simple - they had to score tonight or else Mallorca would progress into the semi-finals.

The Islanders, on the other hand, were buoyant after their 3-1 humbling of Valencia at the ONO arena on Sunday, giving their hopes of escaping the drop a huge boost.

However, their away form is notoriously poor, and Coach Gregorio Manzano had a difficult decision to make - defend their advantage or take an offensive approach to the match?

In the end, it proved to be an open encounter, with Mallorca looking to hit Betis on the counter-attack, knowing their hosts had to come out in search of a goal. Fernando Varela and Webo both went close for the visitors, while Sergio Garcia threatened at the other end with a well-struck shot.

As the match went on, Betis's deficiencies offensively became abundantly clear as they simply could not break down a stubborn Mallorca defence. Sergio Garcia and Mehmet Aurelio led the charge for the Verdiblancos, but they could get the goal they needed to send the match into extra time.

To highlight their desperation, Garcia threw himself down in the area in the final moments but the referee was unmoved and it was Mallorca who were jubilant - they had reached the semi-finals of the Copa Del Rey.

Teams:

Betis: Ricardo; Nelson, Juanito, Rivas, Monzón; Arzu, Mehmet Aurelio, Damian, Eman, Mark Gonzalez, Sergio García

Mallorca: Aouate; Josemi, David Navarro, Nunes, Corrales; Cléber, Martí, Varela, Castro; Trejo, Webó

Sporting Gijon 1 - 2 Athletic Bilbao

Sporting were humbled 5-1 by Getafe on Sunday, not exactly ideal preperation for this second leg match, but in recent weeks their home form has been excellent, winning in three of their last four matches, and would fancy their chances against a Bilbao side who also lost at the weekend, going down 2-1 to Hugo Sanchez's Almeria outfit.

Both sides have an attacking outlook, and Sporting flew out of the blocks to change the complexion of this fixture within the opening 60 seconds.

On-form Carmelo nipped in front of a stranded Iraizoz in the Bilbao goal to give the home side the perfect start and ensure that this tie would not be heading for extra time.

However, Caparro's Basque side have shown incredible resilience in recent weeks, coming from behind to beat both Valencia and Atletico Madrid, and they knew that a solitary strike would see them through on the away goals rule.

No-one in the Primera Division has conceded more goals than Sporting, but Bilbao's front pairing of Llorente and Ion Velez were finding it difficult to cause problems despite the fragility of the Gijon back line.

But just when it appeared Sporting had made it half-time, Atletico struck a killer goal that turned the tie around. Midfielder Ivan Gabilondo despatched the ball clinically past Sergio Sanchez, and now Sporting had it all to do - this was cup football it its finest.

But if that effort hadn't knocked the stuffing from Sporting, Caparros side ruthlessly went ahead five minutes into the second half.

Orbaiz swung in an excellent delivery and it was met by David Lopez who netted confidently to give his side a 2-1 lead. Sporting had to score twice to extend their cup run this season.

As the half went on the yellow card count rose as Sporting were frustrated with the manner in which they had thrown the tie away, and Bilbao were throwing everything into maintaining their advantage.

But Sporting were crushed - and Bilbao joined Real Mallorca in the semi-final draw of the Copa Del Rey.

Teams:

Sporting: S. Sergio, Sastre, Ivan Hernandez, Neru, Jose Angel; Matabuena, Michel, Luis Moran, Caramel, Diego Castro, Bilic.

Athletic: Iraizoz; Iraola, Ocio, Amorebieta, Koikili; David Lopez, Javi Martinez, Orbaiz, Gabilondo; Ion Velez, Llorente.
