Post CONFIRMED : City Agree Deal With Everton For Joleon Lescott
Everton Target Newcastle United's Alan Smith - Report

Newcastle United are a club shrouded in uncertainty at the moment, as they head into their final day tussle with Aston Villa in Birmingham knowing that even victory may not be enough to keep them in the Premier League.

One certainty, though, is that there will be changes, not least to the playing staff who have arguably most to answer for in this season of woe, with many observers predicting a 'mass exodus' from St James' Park in the summer.

One player who could be on his way to pastures new is utility man Alan Smith, who has been missing for much of this miserable campaign through injury. A report in The Newcastle Chronicle today claims that the former England international is piquing the interest of Everton, a club who have guaranteed themselves European football once again with another solid season of progress under the astute management of David Moyes.

The Toffees are keen to move on to the next level and run the top four even harder next season, and Moyes knows he needs to add to his present a squad with both more numbers and more quality. Smith, an experienced and resilient campaigner with the kind of resolute mentality Moyes seems to like, could represent good business, particularly as he can operate anywhere in midfield or attack.

Relegation could prove a clinching factor, as Smith's heavy Premier League wages would prove extremely burdensome to a club in the Championship, even one of Newcastle's size, with vastly reduced television money arriving in the coffers.

Everton have former Newcastle coach Steve Round on their current staff, and have shown interest in Smith in the past, adding weight to the report.

Everton Consider Swoop For Newcastle United's Michael Owen?

Everton are pondering handing Newcastle United's Michael Owen a contract during the close-season, according to a report in the Britain.

The England international will be available to sign on a free transfer this summer as his contract at St. James' Park is due to expire.

Apparently, Toffees manager David Moyes is set to meet with chairman Bill Kenwright at some point next week to outline their targets in the transfer market, and how much they have to spend.

Owen is thought to be keen on a move to Goodison Park as he supported the Merseyside based outfit as a youngster.

However, it is claimed that Everton will ask to him to more than halve his current wage demands, reportedly £100,000-a-week, and may even insert a pay-as-you-play clause in any contract offered.

Should the 29-year-old opt not to take up any offer the Toffees might make, it is said that Wigan Athletic could also be a possible destination for the striker.

Newcastle United's Michael Owen In Talks To Join Everton?

Newcastle United's Michael Owen has entered negotiations with Everton.

Apparently, the Toffees have offered the 29-year-old, who is available on a free transfer this summer, a contract worth £50,000-a-week.

It is claimed that talks are progressing well, despite the striker having to significantly reduce his wage demands from £120,000-a-week.

The England international, who has scored 40 goals in 89 caps, is believed to be eager to complete a move back to Merseyside, having represented Liverpool from 1996-2004.

Owen's home is situated in the surrounding area, as are his horse-racing interests.

Since joining the Magpies for £16 million from Real Madrid in 2005, the 5ft 8in forward has been plagued by injuries, restricting him to just 79 appearances.

However, he managed to score 30 goals during that spell. Should Owen remain fit and enjoy a prolonged run in an Everton side looking to break into the Premier League's top four, a return to the international fold could be on the horizon.
