Sir Matt Busby's 100th anniversary hounoured with match

Manchester United reserves will tackle Motherwell at Fir Park for the Sir Matt Busby Shield on Sunday to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Sir Matt Busby's birth.

Busby remains one of Lanarkshire's most celebrated sons and as part of the celebrations, North and South Lanarkshire Councils have jointly announced the launch of a Sir Matt Busby scholarship programme.

The scheme will allow adults and youths within the Lanarkshire community to take the first steps in emulating Busby by providing them with free coaching education.

All profits generated from this weekend's game will be invested into the scholarship.

Motherwell, meanwhile, have completed the loan signing of Charlton's former France Under-21 captain Yassin Moutaouakil.

The 23-year-old right-back moves to Fir Park on an initial six-month deal.

Moutaouakil joined Charlton just over two years ago, reportedly fighting off interest from the likes of Barcelona, Lazio, Everton, Aston Villa and Celtic.

But he failed to hold down a first-team place at The Valley and, following a trial at Portsmouth, has been allowed to move on.

Motherwell manager Jim Gannon told his club's official website: "He's had a frustrating couple of seasons and hasn't played as much as he would like and he needs now to get out and play and, if you like, showcase his talents.

"I think this is a fantastic opportunity for him to come to Motherwell and the SPL and, at the same time, brilliant for us to have such a talented player in our squad.

"He's the type of player who will give us an attacking option from full-back and our expansive style will suit him. Typical of French players, he's technically good, a great athlete with great pace.

"He'll also give us more depth and the additional security of having more players in the pool."

Busby Babe passes away

Manchester United is sad to report the death of former player Albert Scanlon. He was 74.

Born on 10 October 1935, Scanlon successfully came through the United youth system and made his debut for Matt Busby's first team in 1954, at the tender age of 19 - hence his inclusion in the group of players known as the 'Busby Babes.'

Twice a title winner as an outside forward in 1956 and 1957, Scanlon was on the ill-fated flight from Belgrade to Manchester following a European Cup match in February 1958.

When the plane crashed after refuelling in Munich, Scanlon was among the survivors while eight of his team-mates and 15 other passengers and crew lost their lives.

After recovering from injuries sustained in the disaster, he continued his playing career at Old Trafford and accumulated 127 senior appearances and 35 goals for the Reds.

He moved on to Newcastle United in 1960 and later played for Lincoln City and Mansfield Town before retiring in 1966.

Everyone at Manchester United sends deepest condolences to Albert's family and friends.
