Mark Viduka close to Fulham move

Viduka, according to the Daily Express, flew to the capital last night for talks with Roy Hodgson.

The 33 year-old was expected to join Portsmouth. However, the deal appears to have collaspsed after the south coast club's financial troubles halted any move.

The Australian, who is a free agent after his contract with the Championship club ran out, has reportedly asked for a two-year contract.

This, though, may prove a stumbling block for an injury-prone player who made just 12 league appearances last season.

The striker could prove a valuable addition to Hodgson's squad who will be hoping to challenge in Europe this season after their seventh-placed finish last season propelled them into the Europa League qualifiers.

Hodgson, who took Inter Milan to the Uefa Cup final in 1997, would be hoping to use Viduka's experience at the highest level in European football to help his relatively inexperienced squad.

Viduka, who enjoyed the best days of his playing career with David O'Leary's Leeds United and reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2001, will have a medical at Craven Cottage today.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Al Fayed, the Fulham owner, has told Hodgson that he is free to spend on his squad as the club look to build on their remarkable turnaround in fortunes following Hodgson's arrival in Dec 2007.

A source close to Al Fayed said: “The chairman has told the manager that he would rather see players being signed.

“He wants to build on what has been achieved.”

Australia's Mark Viduka Set To Retire - Report

The long-running transfer saga involving Mark Viduka could be permanently over, with reports now claiming the 33-year-old has decided quit football altogether.

Sportal claims that sources close to the player have said he is set to retire and look for “a new start in life”.

His decision to bring to an end a 17-year career should not come as a surprise, given his conspicuous reluctance to sign with an English Premier League club during the off-season despite interest in his services.

Earlier in the year, national team manager Pim Verbeek had told reporters ahead of Australia’s final World Cup qualifiers in June that Viduka was in fact considering his future in the game.

It was then that the Newcastle United striker – who would go on to fight a losing battle against relegation with his club – rejected the Dutchman’s overtures to join his Socceroos camp for the first time.

Viduka has been in the international wilderness since captaining Australia during their ill-fated 2007 Asian Cup campaign, with injury problems having hampered his club career over the past two years.

Having never regained the sort of fitness levels that he attained during Guus Hiddink’s reign as manager of the Socceroos – when he produced his finest ever form on the international stage – he now appears set to spend time with his wife Ivana and their three children, current sailing in his yacht off the Croatian coast.

Recently the former Middlesbrough and Celtic striker turned down the opportunity to link up with Australia team-mate Mark Schwarzer at Fulham.

Despite his indecision and failure to commit himself to the cause of his national team less than 12 months out from the 2010 World Cup, Verbeek has always stressed that he will leave the door open for Viduka to return to the fold if he finds a club, form and fitness.

It is a reflection of the high regard in which the striker is held in his home country, bringing a level of technical quality and experience not shared by any other Australia striker.

Verbeek will continue to groom the likes of Josh Kennedy and Scott McDonald in his absence, though that will be nothing out of the ordinary for the former South Korea boss – he has never had the opportunity to use Viduka at any point during his tenure as Socceroos boss.
